What To Do If The Power Goes Out?

30 September, 2009

The wind was howling Decemberish last night, and the lights flickered a few times. This motivated me to make sure I was prepared if the power went out. It goes without saying you should have some basic supplies on hand, but what are the most effective items to have in your emergency preparedness kit in case of a power outage? I'm glad you asked.

Make sure you have several flashlights and spared batteries on hand. Flashlights are safer than candles, so keep one in each room of your house, and a fresh supply of batteries centrally located. Having a wireless security system in place, as well as the benefits of cellular monitoring services, will make sure your household is safe even when power does fail.

A battery operated radio, especially in weather-related power outages, will not only bring you important updates, but will help to break up the silence, which will calm you and your family.

Your pantry should be stocked with food that don’t require refrigeration. Cereals, canned soup and vegetables, and other items are essential. Don't forget the old fashioned can opener. You could find yourself without power for days.

Make sure every person in your house knows where to find these items if the power goes out.
