Travel Safely

14 July, 2009

Did you know that more than one billion people stay in American hotels each year? Most individuals travel with no complications, and enjoy peaceful vacations and business trips. Unfortunately, some do experience problems and even fall victim to burglary, theft and assault. Hotel security professionals have suggested that crime may be on the rise, as many hotels have been forced to reduce employee hours and even cut security staff altogether!

There are many things you can do to avoid becoming a victim, both at home and on the road. GE Security wants you to remain safe, and understand that travelers tend to be a prime target for thieves looking for an easy win. How can you prevent this unfortunate crime?

• Try to get a hotel room between the third and sixth floors – not on ground-level.
• Keep your door closed and locked at all times; lock windows and use dead bolts.
• Never open your door to strangers. If someone knocks unexpectedly, claiming to be staff, call the front desk before opening the door.
• Park your vehicle as close to the hotel as possible, and in a well-lit area.
• Acquaint yourself with the hotel’s emergency evacuation plan.
• Choose a hotel with security cameras.
