Understanding the security system in your home or business is very important. Below you will find a helpful list of GE Security glossary terms. Backup - Saving information onto another device for safety purposes.

Ethernet - A type of LAN (local area network) that connects several devices into one system.

Authentication - The process of utilizing a biometric system to verify the identity of a person.

Fail-secure - A lock that needs power to unlock. During a power loss, the lock stays locked. Fail-safe is a more common term.

Handing - Used in identifying whether to use a left-handed or a right-handed lock. Stand on the side of the door that you can see the hinges from. If the lock is on the right side of the door, with the hinges on the left, use a right-hand lock. If the lock is on the left side of the door, with the hinges on the right, use a left-hand lock.

Bandwidth - a range within a band of wavelengths or frequencies; the amount of information that can be transferred in a specific amount of time.

Enterprise - A term that refers to an organization or entity.

Fiber-Optics - A way of transmitting data, audio, and video that utilizes tiny filaments of glass to transfer the content in the form of light. Fiber-optic transmissions send video with less signal loss than other transfer methods.

Host - The main computer for an access control system, also known as the server.

IP - Internet protocol selects the form that packages (datagrams) take, while addressing scheme.
