Alarm System Helps Police Find Suspect

A 22-year-old man in Lincoln, Nebraska has been arrested for allegedly breaking into a 63-year-old woman's home. Local authorities responded to an alarm at approximately 2:00 a.m., when apparently the suspect, Clint Neumann, triggered a motion sensor inside the woman's home.

Retail Theft and Shoplifting Rates Up

According to a recent National Retail Security Survey (NRSS), conducted by the University of Florida, commercial loss is on the rise due to increased rates of retail theft. In addition, reports show that shoplifting, administrative error, employee theft and vendor fraud have increased, breaking a six-year decline. The NRSS suggests that the economic recession is partly responsible for increased rate of loss experienced by retailers.

Kalamazoo Man Charged with Home Invasion

Even after signing up to receive Google Alerts pertaining to 'home invasions' and 'burglaries,' it baffles me to discover just how frequently break-ins occur in the U.S. Kalamazoo, Michigan was the setting for a recent home invasion that led a woman to hide in her closet until authorities arrived. The woman reportedly didn't own a home security system, thus Arthedeus Higgins was able to enter her home easily, and unnoticed by neighbors. Higgins entered the Michigan home by kicking the door down, which indicates the victim probably did not employ deadbolt locks.

$500,000 Worth of Items Stolen

Check the local newspaper, and you are sure to find a roster of recent burglaries in your community. Each day, TV news broadcasts are saturated with tales of break-ins and violent attacks on innocent civilians. Last weekend in Catawba County, North Carolina, the Huffman residence was burglarized by 17-year-old Christian Goss. Without an alarm system to notify the proper authorities, Goss was able to steal Huffman's 2007 Mercedes S65, 10 flat-screen TVs, and approximately $500,000 worth of home entertainment equipment. Goss' bond was set at $75,000, which is nothing compared to the hefty sum of goods he pillaged from Huffman's home.
