One has to wonder if the British faith in Scotland Yard is sorely waning?
Figures from a survey conducted by British insurance firm Direct Line and posted in May of 2009 on www.telegraph.co.uk show some interesting facts about how the British might protect themselves from home intruders. While the article doesn't mention burglar alarm systems or wireless alarm systems, it does mention various hands-on methods of defense.
Specifically, the study found that some 65 percent would arm themselves with general household items, with almost half of those reaching for a cricket bat, a baseball bat, or a tennis racquet and a larger number voting in favor of a walking stick; only eight percent would dare to approach a burglar bare-handed.
As might be expected, men were more likely than women to try to stop an intruder. More than seven in ten men said they would approach a burglar, compared to just 54 percent of women.
Here in the states, where burglars are likely packing a firearm or knife, such vigilante action could be considered quite foolish. Do what you can to protect yourself and call the authorities to apprehend the criminal. Your belongings can always be replaced; your life cannot.
