Advanced Security Equipment: The Alarm Missile

4 September, 2009

Unless you're in the military, one type of alarm system that might not readily come to mind is the wireless ALARM missile, aka Air Launched Anti-Radiation Missile. This British anti-radiation missile was designed to destroy enemy radars and has been used by the Royal Air Force and the Royal Saudi Air Force.

Such high-tech security equipment is a world apart from our own alarm systems, targeting enemies much more dangerous than your average burglar. The development of ALARM began in the 1980s and the battle between contractors was bitter, given that there's a lot of money at stake when it comes to air-force security equipment. Development was further impeded by difficulties in 1986 with the missile's motor, named Nuthatch. Apparently they had problems with the "burn-loiter-burn characteristic." But eventually the ALARM system was completed and successfully used in the 1991 Gulf War, the 1999 Allied Force offensive in Kosovo, and the 2003 Invasion of Iraq.
